How to do it

  1. Set an adjustable bench to about 30 degrees and sit back with a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Bring the dumbbells to shoulder height with your palms facing forward.
  3. Press up and slightly back until your arms are straight over your upper chest.
  4. Lower under control until your upper arms are level with your torso.

Coaching cues

  • Keep the incline shallow, around 30 degrees, so your shoulders do not take over the lift.
  • Keep your shoulder blades pulled back and down against the bench.
