How to do it

  1. Set the bar in a smith machine at about hip height and lock it in place.
  2. Lie underneath and grip the bar slightly wider than your shoulders with straight arms.
  3. Squeeze your glutes so your body is one straight line from heels to head.
  4. Pull your chest to the bar, then lower under control until your arms are straight.

Coaching cues

  • Raise the bar to make it easier and lower it to make it harder.
  • Bend your knees and plant your feet if the straight-leg version is too hard.
