How to do it

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip width apart, optionally with your fingertips on a wall for balance.
  2. Press through the balls of your feet to lift your heels as high as they will go.
  3. Pause for a second at the top with your ankles straight, not rolled out.
  4. Lower slowly until your heels touch the floor again.

Coaching cues

  • Stand with the balls of your feet on a step to get a deeper stretch at the bottom.
  • Slow the lowering to about three seconds, calves respond well to time under tension.
